Meditation Practice for Moms and Dads

Shana Smith is a Gainesville musician, chanting leader, meditation event organizer, and parent. She has been working steadily on the blog Meditation Practice for Moms and Dads. Shana shares anecdotes and insights here that any parent with a meditation or spiritual practice will appreciate. Even non-parents will enjoy her writing.

Here is an excerpt:

MEDITATION PRACTICE FOR MOMS AND DADS, Tip #23: Here in Florida, we talk about hurricanes a lot. The other day, my daughter was asking me about the eye of the hurricane. We talked about how it is supposed to be very beautiful and almost mystically calm when the eye passes over. She noted that “If a really big hurricane comes, I would just find my way to the eye and just stay in there.” My meddling monkey mind thought about this for a moment and chimed in: “Oh, no. The eye is right in the middle of it. You’d be stuck. How would you get out? What if you can’t stay there and the worst parts of the hurricane are right there? Best to get as far from the hurricane as possible.” My daughter’s response: “Momma, you can just stay in the eye until the hurricane eventually runs out of energy. Then you are never blown away, and you get to experience something really amazing.” Whoa. Never, EVER underestimate the natural Divine wisdom of a 9-year old. See you in the Eye.

Help Gainesville. Share Your Meditation Story.

Gainesville supports a large community of individuals deeply committed to their personal wellness and spiritual practices. Meditation is a big part of many practitioner’s routines, and Gainesville offers many opportunities to learn how to meditate and to share time in meditation and personal reflection with others.

However, there are many in Gainesville that could benefit from a meditation practice. They may not have ever heard about meditation, don’t realize how beneficial it can be, or don’t realize that there are many opportunities to get started in their own hometown.

We thought it would be a good way to raise awareness of the benefits of meditation practice if residents of Gainesville that meditate could share their personal stories about how they got into meditation along with concrete examples of how meditation has helped them improve their own lives, their relationships with family and friends, and the way they deal with life in general. We would share these stories on http://gainesvillemeditation.com.

Please submit from a few sentences to no more than a few paragraphs regarding one or more of the following topics:

  • Why you started meditating
  • How you got started meditating
  • Any challenges you experienced along the way
  • How and where you meditate
  • The benefits you have received from meditation

You may choose to have your contribution published anonymously or publicly. If you do want to contribute publicly, consider including a picture of yourself. We may choose to edit your submission for length or clarity. We will confirm any edits with you before we publish your contribution.

Please email your contribution to gainesville.meditation@gmail.com.
